When Henry Royce released his Rolls Royce for sale in 1906, the model 40/50, it created a sensation at Olympia by its looks, clean design, and the very obvious quality of the workmanship that had gone into its making. C. S. Rolls and Claude Johnson knew what the public, to whom they were selling, wanted.
They knew that, provided they could get what they wanted, money was a very secondary consideration, and it was therefore with this market in mind that the 40/50 Rolls Royce was designed. The selling point of the car then – as always since, was silence, and complete freedom from vibration.
It was claimed to be as silent as a ghost, and although catalogued as the 40/50, a jocular reference by Claude Johnson to the first car produced as our “silver ghost” was considered so apt that the name stuck, and the car became the 40/50 Silver Ghost.

From 1906 to 1925 this model continued in series production with only such minor changes as time, and experience gained, decreed. In the history of the motor-car no other model of any make – Citron with the light front-wheel-drive 12-h.p. car in its various guises excepted-has continued in production so long. Ford, who himself used a Rolls Royce Ghost, made his famous model “T” in vast numbers for 18 years, probably since the cost of retooling for production on such a scale would have been prohibitive. This long-term supremacy in the formative years of the industry was achieved because every single part of the car had to be perfect; perfectly designed, made of the most perfect materials available and as perfectly as a car could be made. It was made quite irrespective of cost, time, wastage of materials or any other factor, and before the chassis was sent to the coachbuilders (Barkers in the very early days) it had to cover many hundreds of miles on tests in the hands of experienced testers. Later in the life of the series, as developments were made in the experimental department, chassis in the hands of key testers were sent to cover thousands of miles on the roads and over Alpine terrain in France.
The testers job was to find any faults which might exist in the car. On its return the car was stripped and the faults – if any, rectified. The body was then built by the carriage builders to the customers needs but strictly under Rolls Royce supervision. The result, even in an age of discrimination, was outstanding.

In its round up of club news, The Autocar magazine carried a report of the Middlesex County Automobile Clubs annual gymkhana, held at Potters Bar Hertfordshire on 17 July 1926.

The prizes were awarded by the principal of the famous local Bentley dealers, Aldous Thruxley, son of the late Brevington Huxley, who died attempting to cross Antarctica on a camel.

Altogether that day, there were eight novelty events, pride of place going to the Blindfold Driving Competition in which, as the title implies, entrants had to drive blindfolded to a certain point in the fastest time possible and without assistance from passengers.

Happily this contest did not take place on public roads, but anyway, if a car appeared to be following a dangerous course, such as towards the beer tent for instance, a bell was helpfully rung as a warning to the blindfolded driver.

The star performer was one R.C. Sharpe who notched up a notable double. He won the Letter Box race, where a lady passenger riding in his Bentley for sale had to post a card in each of four “post boxes” without alighting, he then followed it up with another victory in the Lightning Artist race, where his passenger had to name correctly the animal drawn on a blackboard to which the Ferrari for sale had first been driven.

Other events included the Steady Hand race, which required a passenger to fill a crystal glass tumbler with water and carry it in the car to the end of the course without spilling the contents. Then there was the Potato Putting event, which was broadly based upon golf putting, but with hockey sticks being used in place of golf clubs, and using potatoes in place of golf balls.

Alas, there was no description of the rules for this last named competition, but your imagination can fill in the blank spaces. At the end of the day, everybody agreed that they had a great day out at the gymkhana.
